This site is about my passion for photography. I live and work in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. So most of my pictures will be shot in or around Amsterdam.
I’ve started this site because I was looking for a way to become a better photographer. Now how do you get good at something? By practice, practice and practice so that’s what I’m doing. I’m still learning the vocabulary and grammar but I hope that in the end (don’t know when that will be) I wil be able to create poetry.
Why only 1 photo?
I make of course more than 1 (sometimes about 300-400) pictures a day. Sometimes there are better days with more then 1 good picture, pictures that are better than a picture on a not so good day. It’s a big dilemma not to post those ones but if I do post them the concept and purpose of this site is gone. But the learning process of choosing 1 single photo as the best is also a good side effect. So maybe I will just post them to Flickr (which I do already quite regularly) don’t know what to do yet.
Will you do this for the rest of your life?
Hmmm, don’t know that but my intentions are YES I will! But I don’t have a the ability to look in the future unfortunately.
How many pictures do you shoot on a average day?
On a average day around 50-70. But sometimes only 10 (that’s I think my absolute minimum) and sometimes like 500. It depends on the subject and occasion.
Don’t you sometimes just wanna throw your camera out of the window?
Well to tell you the truth it is sometimes a little bit tiring but when I connect my SD card and the photo’s are uploading I forget all that. And it would be stupid to throw a expensive camera away I should better sell it.
Can I buy your photo’s?
Well that my friend is something for the future. Maybe I will offer that opportunity to my site, don’t know how yet, I think I will use something like Istockphoto (if I get through the commission) or another service since Istockphoto is more for professional powerpoint creators, if you know what i mean. But don’t hesistate to contact me when you want to use a picture. My pictures are copyright protected so you have to contact me before using them!
Do you want to be a professional photographer?
Yes and No. I’m currently working as a Front-end developer and I like that too. The only thing I don’t like about it is sitting behind a screen for a whole day. I like to be in the fresh air. So again don’t know what the future will bring. I’m passionate about photography so I think that’s a solid base to become a professional. But since there are so many photographer’s these day’s, to stand out is a difficult task.
Why in English since this is not your native language?
That’s something I’ve been struggeling with since the first day I ever wrote something on the Internet somewhere in 1996 that was. But to get a broad audience I think it’s the only way to go. So when you see some spelling/grammar errors let me know so I can correct that.
How did you make this site?
When did you start this site?
I’ve started 1pictureday.com on 14th of february 2009. I was surprised that the domain name was still available so I quickly registred the domain and used tumblr.com to post the photo’s. But although I liked the simplicity of tumblr, 1pictureaday was getting larger and larger. The ability to highlight, categorize and archive the pictures in a good manner is what I missed. So I transferred all the pictures to a wordpress site and used the theme ePhoto from http://www.elegantthemes.com. I liked the design of the theme and it was my first wordpress site. But I didn’t like the way I had to post the pictures and the theme was a little heavy (lot’s of http requests ) so it was a bit to slow. So now I’ve created my own lightweight theme. And of course the other possibility’s with a god CMS like wordpress is something a good photoblog can’t live without these day’s.
What camera gear do you use?
What’s your daily job?
What are the rules?
- Post 1 picture a day, if I’m able to. When I’m on a vacation this is not always possible
